It Is Only With the Heart That ……..

I had no internet yesterday so was unable to write, but the pain along with the beauty continues.

When I arrived in the village of Viana I went to the bar, which is where everything goes on and you can find out whatever it is that you need to know.  While having a cafe con leche, a woman came in and asked if I was the American from Atlanta.  Yes, I said.  She was also an American, from Oregon.

She asked if she could sit down and we began to talk.  She was a delightful woman with so much zest for life. She asked the usual question of why are you doing the Compostela de Santiago…….I explained and asked the same of her.

Her story was that she was diagnosed with lymphoma the same day her husband had a stroke.  They had both been ultra runners and found it very surprising to say the least.  We talked and she took pictures and bonded even if just for a moment….you never know if and when you will see the people you meet ever again, but one thing is for sure…….the conversation is always from the heart.

As the author Antoine de Saint Exupery wrote, from the Little Prince.…..¨It is only with the heart that one can see rightly.  What is essential is invisible to the eye.¨

That is how I replied to my new friend……whose name I didn´t even know……you must feel the beauty of the Compostela in your heart, it can not come from pictures………

Force

As I lay in bed collecting my thoughts from yesterday and preparing for today the word ¨force¨ just will not go away.

Yesterday morning started out with leaving the Alberque on the outskirts of Estella and seeing 2 cats in what appeared to be unrequested mating……and as it goes on the road to Santiago, I observe, take note, and move on…..because so much happens.

Within 30 minutes I am at the Monastery where the Codex Calixtinus was written.  Now referred to as the oldest travel book ever written describing the travels of a ¨pilgrim¨in the XII century.  What an adventure to travel the same path….you can feel the history with every step.

At this monastery wine comes out of the faucet for travelers 24 hours a day.  What a site to behold!  Indeed I need a video and picture, so I ask my Dutch friend to take video, actually she volunteered, saying you need a video.  With that the German woman who has declared her hate for life from the first day at dinner pops in.  The first night at dinner, as people recount the events they have experienced, the German woman is purely hostile in energy; the second night at the monastery, which could not have been more beautiful, she tells a table of 12 guests that she hates people from Holland; imagine, hatred of an entire nation, meanwhile 3 people are from Holland.  Her other countrymen at the table are embarrassed of this woman to say the least….but as many people who are filled with hate, she feels the need to be the loudest, and  in her mind….mission accomplished.  Anyway, she jumps in front of me to have her photo taken and then stands and drinks and drinks and drinks as if she doesn’t have to walk 20 kilometers today!  I find it truly amazing that once again there are those that give to life, without wanting anything in return and those that are takers, and a taker she is.  Forcing her way through life…….something rarely seen or felt here on the Road to Santiago.

I spent the next few hours thinking about the cats, the woman and force.

Within a few hours I pass a Medieval Castle where the Moors and the Arabs fought for ownership…the thought came to me that on the face of this earth, both love and hate can all exists in the same place…..whatever comes in your direction brings meaning to your life.  I decide to rise to the occasion and create my day.

A Glass of Wine Keeps the Doctor Away

Today I travelled through vineyard after vineyard complete with olive trees.  One thing is certain, the Mediterranean Diet works!  It is however more than just diet, everyone, yes everyone, walks!  I met a woman, 92 years old, out walking and stretching along the way.

Every meal is complete with red wine……plentiful to say the least, but in small amounts and for the purpose of enjoyment rather than consumption….something to think about.

Carry On

I left Pamplona yesterday morning and walked through a beautiful city, complete with a working drawbridge to protect the fortress.  The large city jewel of a park had incense burning, which was quit a treat for the senses.  The day however was grueling; up and down through the windmill area and into the dry Navarra.

As I stopped for lunch I was actually dosing off and told myself you better get moving …you’ve got another four hours complete with large hills.  Walking along the trail, again, my sense of smell was stimulated.  It was lemon thyme, and I crumbled it and put it all over my hands for a change of fragrance….nicely saying, I stink as only one could imagine.

Another few hours down the road, I saw an older gentleman happy to be working in his farm.  He looked at the weary traveler with a big smile and announced “One Kilometer.” As you can imagine that was music to my ears.

Got myself to Albergue Jakue, a very nice, clean bed………and after today I felt like that’s all I needed.  Total exhaustion was the name of the lesson, and I didn’t even have the strength to write….I jotted a few notes so I would not forget the days events and went to bed.

Woke up this morning feeling alive again, and ready to head out to another  day full of surprises and even longer than yesterday.  Life does in fact have it´s demanding moments for all of us, some physically exhausting, some emotionally exhausting; somehow we dig deep and find the strength to carry on.

Carry on is what I´ll do.  Talk to you later……….

The Language of the Body

The body speaks a language……but do we listen?

Headed out this morning after the church bells rang at 6 am and not too far into the trip I had to make my way around a Magnesium Manufacturing Plant.  The markers were very confusing and almost maze like.  At this point my second brain, otherwise known as your gut, told me not to go too far….there´s a chance you’re not on the right road.  Interestingly enough, your second brain as I call it, has just about as many nerve endings as your brain.  There´s a reason for that…..built in survival mechanism.  But how many times do we try to overlook our gut instinct?  I put my back pack down on the side of the road and walked to see where it headed.  Indeed I was correct; the road ended and was off the trail.  No worries…..figured it out and back on the right path.

Getting lost would have been a major setback, but I trusted my gut instinct, that red flag that we possess, and thankfully was correct.

I had seen 2 Italian guys traveling together for a few days now….it´s funny how you run into the ¨pilgrims¨ you started with and it´s like a reunion with huge smiles and pats on the back when you see them again.  The human spirit is amazing.  Last night one of the guys told me he hurt his Achilles tendon because another traveler told him I was a doctor.  I offered some anti inflammatory topical and he said he had taken some oral anti inflammatories, and was feeling better.  I saw him as he left this morning and he said he was feeling better….Buen Camino to you …….a few hours later I saw him again and he was very sad saying he was getting a ride to Pamplona and then was going back to Italy, he couldn’t stand the pain.

At this point I began to think about when our body speaks to us……how do we answer back……

I have arrived in Pamplona….and see those familiar faces and ask about the faces I don´t see and pray they are alright.

I am thrilled to have made it another day and blessed to be staying in a 16th century church for the night.

Find something fascinating in everyday and you´ll find the body giving you the words to all the questions you ask…….just be willing to put aside your ego and listen to the language.

What Goes Up Must Come Down

What a way to wake up; a rising crescendo of chanting and incense burning all in the settting of a dimly lit Monastery.  It was time to rise and shine and start a new day.  The Monks are incredible hosts.  I left the Monastery with a view of a bright crescent moon over the Chapel as I was wished peace and safety.

Today the day was spent coming down from the Pyreness Mountains, from an elevation of 5000 feet, which I had spent the last two days ascending.  Tough on the knees to say the least.

There was a choice, to take the road which was 3.4 kilometers or take 4.0 kilometers to take me to my next stop.  Life is fill of cross roads, and sometimes they even seem obvious, but may actually be camilians in disguise.

Of course by this point, a 7 hour day of rough terrain, I told myself to go with the 3.2 kilometers.  As it turned out, in the end, this was a much tougher road to take.

Every life comes with cross roads and every cross road is part of life´s journey for each of us.

The choices we make, in turn make us who we are in the end.  That is the journey.

The mission in life is to find wholeness and in the end simplicity which defines us and remains our individual mystery for each of us to discover.

Greetings!

Greetings!

What an incredible journey to date…….so much to write…so little time!  When there is more time to write in detail I certainly will.  The travel was not without life´s  unforeseeable problems.  A train strike in France made for great uncertainty of arriving in Bayonne, France to get the bus to St. Jean Pied De Port, the starting point of the El Camino.  Eventually I made it.  Being submerged in a culture certainly makes the survival instinct kick in real fast!  I even changed my English accent to a French one  and made correct change by the next day; it´s the small things that we appreciate.  The last 2 days has been grueling, walking an elevation of 5000 feet through the Pyrenees Mountains.  Absolutely breathtaking to say the least!  My walking is done for today, as I am 6 hours ahead of EST, and the accommodations could not be lovelier.  A beautiful Monastery run by Monks who know how to keep a very clean house!    So many of life´s lessons have already played out and I will share them all with you.

With Gratitude,

Dr. Evelyn Higgins
